Every pixel on a dashboard is valuable real estate, and visualisations that waste space on decoration rather than information reduce the overall effectiveness of the design.

A number without context is meaningless. Telling a manager that this month's revenue is 1.2 million dollars tells them nothing unless they know whether that is good or bad, improving or declining, above or below expectations. Context transforms data into information, and information into insight. A store manager whose sales are down 5% might be alarmed in isolation, but if the regional average is down 8%, the performance is actually relatively strong. Conversely, a manager whose sales are up 3% might feel comfortable, but if competitors are growing at 10%, the relative underperformance demands attention. Benchmarks are not always available, but where they can be incorporated, they add a dimension of context that significantly improves the quality of decisions the dashboard supports.
Sustaining Dashboard Value Over Time
The initial launch of a dashboard is only the beginning of its lifecycle. Dashboards that are not actively maintained and evolved lose their relevance and usefulness within months. Automated data quality checks should verify that data sources are refreshing on schedule, that key metrics fall within expected ranges, and that data completeness meets defined thresholds. When a quality check fails, the dashboard should clearly indicate that the data may be unreliable, rather than silently displaying stale or incorrect figures.
Usage analytics provide objective evidence of dashboard value. Tracking which dashboards are viewed, by whom, how frequently, and for how long reveals which dashboards are genuinely useful and which are ignored. Dashboards with declining usage should be investigated — the decline may indicate that the dashboard has been superseded by a better source of information, that the underlying business question is no longer relevant, or that technical issues have degraded the user experience. In each case, the appropriate response is different, but usage data provides the starting point for the investigation.
Data Quality Monitoring and Usage Analytics
Data quality is the foundation upon which all dashboard value is built, and it must be actively monitored rather than assumed. Common data quality issues include missing records due to failed data loads, duplicate entries from integration errors, stale data from source systems that have changed their output format, and calculated metrics that produce incorrect results after a business rule change. Usage analytics for dashboards should track not just page views but meaningful engagement metrics such as time spent on the dashboard, interaction with filters and drill-downs, and the frequency of return visits. A dashboard that is opened frequently but viewed for only a few seconds each time may indicate that users check it regularly but find little value, or conversely that the dashboard is so well designed that a quick glance provides all the information needed. Combining usage data with user feedback provides a complete picture of dashboard effectiveness.
The BI team should publish regular reports on both data quality and dashboard usage to demonstrate the value of the analytics platform and identify areas for improvement. Transparency about data quality builds user trust, and transparency about usage patterns creates accountability for dashboard consumers and producers alike. When stakeholders can see that their dashboards are being used and that the data is reliable, confidence in data-driven decision-making grows across the organisation.
